What is EMDR Therapy and How Does It Work?

Therapy can take many different forms, and one approach you may have heard of is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). While the name might sound daunting, EMDR is simply a structured way of helping the brain heal from past experiences. Sometimes, our minds store experiences in a way that continues to cause distress in the present.

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy which was originally developed to treat trauma. Over time, EMDR has evolved. It's been found to help with the treatment of a variety of symptoms, from anxiety and depression to grief, self-worth, and even performance challenges in sports or creative work.

How EMDR Works

During an EMDR session, your trained EMDR therapist will use bilateral stimulation (often guided eye movements, or tapping) while you revisit certain thoughts or memories. This process activates the brain’s natural ability to reprocess and integrate information.

Think of it like your brain updating its “files.” The experience is still part of your story, but it no longer feels overwhelming or disruptive. Many people notice emotional relief, clearer thinking, and a renewed sense of balance after sessions. EMDR allows your brain the chance to heal itself, and gives you control over your life!

What EMDR Can Help With

Emotional Healing

  • Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Anxiety and Panic Attacks

  • Depression or persistent low mood

  • Grief and Unresolved Loss

  • Self-worth and Identity Struggles

Performance Enhancement

  • Performance anxiety at work, in sports, or in creative pursuits

  • Fear of failure or perfectionism

  • Negative self-talk and inner criticism

  • Rebuilding confidence after setbacks or burnout

  • Achieving a focused, “flow” state

Whether you’re seeking deep healing or simply want to unlock your potential, EMDR can be a supportive tool.

Is EMDR Safe?

Yes. When guided by a trained therapist, EMDR is a safe and effective approach. Some sessions may feel emotionally intense as old memories surface, and your therapist will always ensure you feel grounded, supported, and in control throughout the process.

EMDR can be be used both for kids and adults!
