What is a Counseling Intern? Understanding the Support They Provide

Starting therapy is a courageous step. And if you’re paired with an intern counselor, you might wonder: What does that mean for my care?

The truth is, interns are highly trained, closely supported, and passionate about helping clients thrive. Let’s break down why working with an intern is not just safe, but incredibly beneficial.

Who Are Counseling Interns?

Counseling interns are graduate-level students who are in the final stages of their master’s program in counseling or psychology. While they are still training under the close supervision of licensed clinicians, many already bring valuable professional and life experience to their work. Some of our interns have backgrounds in fields like education, ministry, healthcare, or social service which gives them a strong foundation to connect with and support clients.

What Kind of Support Can You Expect?

Interns are trained in evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Person-Centered, and Play Therapy techniques. They can provide:

  • Individual counseling for children, teens, and adults

  • Support for life transitions such as school stress, career changes, or grief

  • Evidence-based interventions to manage anxiety, depression, and trauma

  • Safe and supportive space for self-exploration and building resilience

And here’s the best part! Our interns bring fresh perspectives, high energy, and a genuine passion for helping others. They take the time to really listen, and they’re dedicated to walking alongside you in your journey.

Why Choose an Intern?

Working with an intern doesn’t mean “less support.” In fact, it means you get two layers of care: your intern counselor and the licensed supervisor who oversees their work. This creates a collaborative and attentive therapeutic process. Moreover, it’s also an affordable option! Sessions with interns are available at a reduced rate, making therapy more accessible without sacrificing quality.
